What causes skin pigmentation?
The word ‘pigmentation’ refers to the natural colouring of hair and skin. Special cells called melanocytes produce a substance called melanin which gives our skin its colour. When the cells that produce melanin become damaged or unhealthy, it affects melanin production. If your body produces too much melanin, your skin – or patches of it – get darker. If your body does not make enough melanin, your skin gets lighter, or develops lighter patches.
Exposure to the sun without skin protection can cause uneven pigmentation of your skin. Dark spots – known as age spots or sun spots – often appear on the face, hands and other parts of the body that have had the most exposure to the sun’s damaging UVA rays.
How does the Lumenis M22™ IPL work on pigmentation?
The Lumenis M22™ offers a powerful solution for rejuvenating skin that is marked with age spots, sun spots and other forms of light skin pigmentation.
Lumenis IPL technology treats the skin with short and powerful pulses of light energy, which penetrate into the skin layers below the surface where the extra melanin is gathered. The heat breaks down this pigment into tiny particles, which can be carried away by the body’s lymphatic system and expelled in the natural way.
Because IPL uses multiple wavelengths of light, it can target problem areas with precision and does not shoot light energy into areas of the skin that do not need treating.
IPL can also be combined with one of the M22™ machine’s other modes, the ResurFX™ technology, so that both skin pigmentation and fine lines can be treated simultaneously. IPL technology removes pigmentation and blood vessels while the ResurFX fractional laser stimulates production of collagen and elastin in the deeper layers of the skin to give more radiant, younger-looking skin.
